Beware of Bluetooth Headphones Turning into "Trackers"

Release Date:2022-07-24      Clicks:452

Nowadays, the use of Bluetooth headsets is becoming more and more common. Many officers and soldiers often use Bluetooth headsets when listening to music, playing games, and video chatting with relatives and friends. However, when some officers and soldiers enjoy the convenience brought by Bluetooth headsets, they often ignore the security issues of Bluetooth devices, which are prone to hidden dangers of leakage.

Recently, my comrade-in-arms Xiao Wang bought a pair of the latest Bluetooth earphones. When testing the anti-lost function of the headset, he found that he could pinpoint the location of the Bluetooth headset with a smartphone. Xiao Wang thought about it carefully. If you bring this Bluetooth headset into a secret place, you can not only obtain precise coordinates, but also may record nearby ambient sounds. Wouldn't the Bluetooth headset become a "tracker" or even a "bugger".

Xiao Wang quickly checked the relevant information and learned that some Bluetooth devices currently on the market contain a large number of secure programming interfaces, default settings, etc., and some Bluetooth devices are as complicated as a small smart terminal. From a technical point of view, similar to most wireless technologies, Bluetooth headsets may be monitored and tracked. If malicious code is implanted by exploiting the vulnerability of the Bluetooth headset, it is possible to monitor or track the location of the Bluetooth headset. For example, when pairing for the first time, the user is required to use the personal identification code to verify. In this process, criminals may intercept Bluetooth communication packets and connect by pretending to be the target device. If the network is used to spread the positioning information, even remote tracking and positioning can be achieved.

In order to avoid the possible leakage risk of Bluetooth headsets, the author reminds officers and soldiers that in daily use, they should be careful not to bring Bluetooth headsets into secret-related places, and turn off Bluetooth headsets when they are not in use. When pairing, always verify and confirm the device you are pairing, keeping your passcode safe. Unless pairing is required, set the Bluetooth headset to be undiscoverable by default and keep it in this state to reduce the possibility of the Bluetooth headset being hijacked.
